This place is really, really out of this world.
I came in this past Sunday evening, and it was so good that I had to come back again for dinner! I had the sushi "Surf & Turf" and the "Crispy Rice Spicy Tuna. Both were exceptional. They are also Service Dog Friendly. When I came in both days the served my dog water. I APPRECIATED THAT SO MUCH!!
THANK YOU UMAI FOR MAKING MY VISIT SO WELCOMING!!! -

This place use to be my go-to place for a nice sushi lunch. Sadly, the place has gone downhill.
We came in for lunch and the AC wasnt on. What kind of place doeant turn on the AC when its 90 degrees outside? We commented to the server about the heat and he told us it was on.
A few minutes later we received our food: a sashimi platter and a blue aqua roll. The presentation was great but a few bites in we realized it was a little off. The tuna was a dull maroon color instead of vibrant red on the sushi platter but was the right color on the roll. The sashimi was also slightly slimmy and didnt taste fresh. The yellowtail was off as well and unedible. The roll was fine but we couldn't eat it fast enough before it got warm from the hot restaurant.
Looks like this place isn't getting enough business to turn on their AC and is keeping fish past their freshness dates. -

Stopped in for lunch today. It had been awhile since my last visit. They are still serving up big quality rolls. On previous visits, they had the 50% menu which was always a great deal. Today, I was told they no longer have the 50% menu but was assured the rolls were bigger and better. This came to be a true statement. I had a Rainbow Roll ($12) and a Spicy Tuna hand-roll ($5). The roll was large and good.
A JUNGLE Fever Roll ($17) was ordered at the table and it was massive! There was a Crunchy Roll and an Alaskan Roll as well. All the rolls were delicious. -

Usually not my first sushi place to go in San Marcos but it was my mom's special day and she chose to come here and I do not regret it one bit!!! I am definitely a picky person and when it comes to sushi I'm a tyrant, but Umai had definitely stepped up their game do tonight. The entire staff was so welcoming and kind and funny! The sushi tasted so much better than the first time I went to Umai. I don't know if they got new vendors or I was taken back by how kind the staff was, but the fish tasted better than usual. AND they made something like a sushi muffin special for my mom's special day and it was just special and amazing.
So big tip: go on your special day!!! -
